Two-Hit Hypothesizer Strikes at Cafe Scientifique in May (5/6)

[ May 6, 2008; 6:00 pm; ] While I’m thinking of it, save the date (or use the calendar feature I mentioned) for the Cafe Scientifique in May.

Al Knudson, a researcher at Fox Chase Cancer Center* and developer of the two-hit hypothesis for cancer genetics, will be speaking (details forthcoming).

He’s the past recipient of the Kyoto Prize (often considered the [...]

Martha Farah at the Cafe Scientifique in April (4/1)

[ April 1, 2008; 6:00 pm; ] My favorite neuroethicist, Penn’s Martha Farah, will be appearing at the the Cafe Scientifique on April first (no foolin’).

Her topic is:

“The Human Brain v2.0: How Neuroscience is Poised to Transform Humanity”

And she’s wonderful. You should go. I’d go, but I’ll be in DC.

The Cafe Scientifique is held 6pm on the [...]

Beyond NIH — Private funding for life science research (4/1)

[ April 1, 2008; 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. ] Given the current funding stagnation, it is getting harder for researchers — especially young(er) researchers — to secure grants from traditional sources, like NIH. Increasingly, they’re turning to private foundations and individual donors for funding help.

In that vein, the Chemical Heritage Foundation is holding a free brown bag session noon on Tuesday, April 1, [...]

New Feature: Add The What Events to Your Calendar

The problem with a blog like this one is that I can tell you about upcoming science events, but that you are entirely on your own to remember those events.
Well, problem’s solved. Take a look at the Upcoming Events Calendar on the top of the left sidebar –>

Vaccine forum at the Franklin Institute 3/26

[ March 26, 2008; 7:00 pm; ] This just in!

With all the recent hullabaloo about vaccines and autism, the provocative title from the Franklin Institute’s press release frightened me for a moment: Should the Government Make You Do It? Vaccine Mandates and Children

Sounds ominous. I mean, who wants to be mandated to do anything? But they have a smart crowd [...]

Green Roofs (3/27) and Anura Voyeurs (4/12) at the Schulkill Center

[ March 27, 2008; 6:30 pm; April 12, 2008; 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. ] There are some nifty events coming up at the Schuylkill Center that you should know about.

First, Thursday, March 27, as part of their Citizen Science Program the center is hosting Green Roofs, a talk by Jeff Jabco of the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College. The program is free and begins at 6:30 pm. [...]

The Rebirth of Cool Chestnut Trees, 3/26

[ March 26, 2008; 7:00 pm; ] There are no chestnut trees on Chestnut Street, or anywhere else for that matter, thanks to the chestnut blight. Dumb fungal jerk.

As part of their ever-awesome Town Square lecture series, The Academy of Natural Sciences is bringing around science writer Susan Freinkel to talk about her book, The Life, Death and Rebirth of [...]
