There are no chestnut trees on Chestnut Street, or anywhere else for that matter, thanks to the chestnut blight. Dumb fungal jerk.
As part of their ever-awesome Town Square lecture series, The Academy of Natural Sciences is bringing around science writer Susan Freinkel to talk about her book, The Life, Death and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree. Is the tree really poised for a comeback and, if so, will that mean the return of a related species, the village smithy?
Susan’s talk begins 7pm on Wednesday, March 26. It is free, but you’ll need to RSVP.
Also, for future reference, the Academy has invited everyone’s favorite rogue geneticist to speak in April:
April 10: 5:30 pm
Meet one of America’s most influential scientists, Dr. Craig Venter, and learn about his latest project that resulted in a scientific breakthrough. Venter is a pioneer in mapping the human genome as well as president of the J. Craig Venter Institute and former president of Celera Genomics. In 2003 he launched the Global Ocean Sampling Expedition, which involved assessing microorganisms to produce alternative fuels for the future. Most recently he and colleagues made unprecedented progress on assembling from scratch the DNA chain of Mycoplasma genitalium (bacterium).
