You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to…The Odor Limits

The stench of science emanates from the Monell Chemical Senses Center with a series of events at the Esther M. Klein Art Gallery at the Science Center (the collective term for all of those tall buildings that line Market Street near Penn and Drexel).

Monell Center scientists have teamed with artists for the exhibition, which begins with Smell It: A Do-It-Yourself Smell Map. Who are the people in your neighborhood? Apparently, the people that you meet as you smell them down the street!

Come to the Odor Limits…

Be a part of olfactory art history! Bring your friends and coworkers
to meet the artist Jenny Marketou, whose piece Smell It: A Do It
Yourself Smell Map is featured in the exhibition Odor Limits, on view
at the Esther Klein Art Gallery from May 9 through June 28.

Meet at the Klein Gallery (3600 Market Street) on Friday, May 9 at 12
noon to help Marketou launch her piece prior to the opening reception
later in the day.

Smell It: A Do-It-Yourself Smell Map is an interactive visitor
project created specifically for this exhibition. You will be given a
street map and invited to walk around the neighborhood to record your
olfactory experiences. Then return to the gallery to add your odorous
encounters to a wall-sized, collectively-drawn map to show the
diversity of subjective responses to smell and the shifting of the
neighborhood’s smellscape from one day to the next.

Later in the afternoon, curators Jim Drobnick & Jennifer Fisher will
lead a exhibition walk-through and gallery talk at 4:30pm.

Then stay for the opening reception, which runs from 5 – 8pm, and
enjoy some beer, wine & hors d’oeurves.

Science is incorporated into the show on several levels:

At the exhibit, visitors will have the opportunity to access
commentary from Monell scientists by dialing a number on their cell
phone.

In addition, we’re offering several lectures, including:

Monday, May 12 at Noon: Lunch for Hungry Minds Lecture, “Human
Pheromones: Facts and Fantasies” by Monell scientists George Preti,
PhD and Charles Wysocki, PhD. Lecture will be held at the Science
Center, 3701 Market Street, Third Floor. Complimentary lunch (!!!)
beginning at 11:30. RSVP by Friday, May 9 by calling 215-966-6102

Wednesday June 11 at 4:30pm: SmartTalk Lecture, “The Importance of
Body Odors – from Neurons to Behavior and Back” by Monell scientist
Johan N. Lundström, PhD. Lecture will be held at the Monell Center,
3500 Market Street. RSVP to stein@monell.org.
