Despite the presence of Johnny Depp*, piracy wasn’t all fun and games…erm…I mean, aside from the raping and pillaging, of course.
This Friday, the Franklin teams with the African-American Museum to explore the legacy of slavery and piracy. From their release:
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael H. Cottman tells the story of his personal journey to uncover the history of a sunken 17th century slave ship, the Henrietta Marie, on Friday, June 20 at 7:30 in an “Out of Africa” lecture event co-sponsored by Philadelphia’s African-American Museum and The Franklin. Part of a new event series between the two museums, Cottman’s lecture will be introduced by acclaimed Temple professor of African-American Studies, Dr. Molefi Asante.
Cottman, in particular, seems like an interesting guy and was apparently involved in much of the work surrounding The Wydah, the ship replicated for the Real Pirates exhibit.
* Not quite historically accurate, I think. I’ll take a look into that.
