One of the reasons there have been fewer posts lately is that I took a blessedly-long vacation in the Outer Banks this September. The beaches there aren’t as large (and soft) as those found at our accustomed destination, the Jersey Shore, but the shell hunting was much better, to the delight of my three year-old, who loved to compare her finds to the local shell guide we picked up at the supermarket. The pebbly beaches around Duck, NC, tend to polish the whatever lands ashore. We ended up taking home a couple of freezer-size ziplocks of shells, sea glass and other smooth beach-borne detritus ( everything except for the skate egg cases, they got icky after a few days).
It doesn’t surprise me that there’s another wonderfully geeky subculture devoted to shells. Nor does it surprise me that the Academy of Natural Sciences is hosting a multi-day celebration of shells.
See thousands of exotic and beautiful shells on display and for sale at the largest shell show in the Northeast on Saturday & Sunday. Continue the celebration on Monday, with family activities during the Shell Festival.
Free with museum admission.
