Hear conservation legend Jim “Wild Kingdom” Fowler (11/4 6pm Academy of Natural Sciences)

[ November 4, 2010; 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. ] Hey, did you know you can watch whole episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom online?

Don’t feel so bad…until I went looking for a clip of Jim Fowler, I didn’t either.

Watch them chase that polar bear down via helicopter at the three minute mark. Kind of a different take on the plight of the [...]

Scientists weigh in on the Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus debate tonight! 5-9pm

[ July 22, 2010; 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. ] How could I have missed this?

The folks at the Academy of Natural Sciences are assessing the scientific merits of Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus.

I love these sorts of scientists-take-on-pop-culture events. Unfortunately, the movie is nearly unwatchable…despite the great acting chops of Debbie Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas

It isn’t free, but it is likely worth [...]

Astrology as a Political Ideology in the Reagan Administration Holy Roman Empire. Oct 2, 4pm

[ October 2, 2009; 4:00 pm; ] On Oct 2, Darin Hayton, history of science prof at Haverford College, will be presenting a symposium at the Ewell Sale Library of the Academy of Natural Sciences about astrology as a political ideology. It is part of a colloquium series held by the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science, and is not, [...]

The Nikola Tesla Energy Independence celebrations THIS WEEKEND

Whoa, how did I miss this.
Today marks the 153 birthday of everyone’s favorite real-life mad — meant with all due respect — genius Nikola Tesla. The Nikola Tesla Inventor’s Club is hosting a three-day celebration of the man, his work, and its modern relevance.
Here’s the schedule ripped straight from their site:
Nikola Tesla
Energy Independence [...]

An Introduction to Transition Communities at The Academy of Natural Science’s Town Square

[ July 9, 2009; 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. ] Come on feel the noise
Girls rock your boys
We’ll get wild, wild, wild
Wild, wild, wild.

Perhaps I get a different idea when I hear the words “Quiet Riot,” but the Transition Movement is gaining steam (or wind or solar, preferably) and this event, while not necessarily “rocking,” should be very interesting.

The Academy’s under appreciated [...]

The Discovery of Global Warming (Academy of Natural Sciences 6:30pm)

A little late notice, but worth checking out. Tonight’s Town Square at the Academy of Natural Sciences features Spencer Weart talking about his book The Discovery of Global Warming.
The event is free with registration, which you can do at the Town Square link above or through the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science [...]

Teaching Darwin in Elementary School (Academy of Natural Sciences, March 30, 6 pm)

[ March 30, 2009; 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. ] This is timely, considering the nonsense that just popped up (and justifiably beaten down) in Texas . The Academy of Natural Science’s Town Hall series takes a look on how we are teaching our children about evolution.

Teaching Darwin in Elementary School
Monday, March 30, 6:30-8:30 pm

* Kathleen Fadigan, Ed.D.; Assistant [...]
