Scientists weigh in on the Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus debate tonight! 5-9pm

[ July 22, 2010; 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. ] How could I have missed this?

The folks at the Academy of Natural Sciences are assessing the scientific merits of Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus.

I love these sorts of scientists-take-on-pop-culture events. Unfortunately, the movie is nearly unwatchable…despite the great acting chops of Debbie Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas

It isn’t free, but it is likely worth [...]

IgNobel Prizes simulcast at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Oct 1, 7pm

[ October 1, 2009; 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. ] It is the premier event in the field of science humor, the IgNobel Prizes.

Now, for the first time, you can view it live! Well, for the first time without taking a train to Boston.

Still, its a coup for the surprisingly decidedly hip Chemical Heritage Foundation.

[ March 14, 2009; 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. ] You yearned for it. You screamed for it. You rioted for it. Now its your chance to worship the World Series Trophy in person.

In honor of the start of Spring Training, The Franklin is hosting a special Phillies event this Pi Day. The events are all free with admission, but you get $2 off [...]

J. Robert Oppenheimer: The Play (Two plays, actually) 2/24 7:30

[ February 24, 2009; 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. ] Local science writer, dramtist and bon vivant Mark Wolverton wants to let you know that he has two plays premiering at The Painted Bride (next door to Konak, where you really should eat beforehand) based on his recent book, A Life in Twilight: The Final Years of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

If you’re not otherwise engaged [...]

Advice for the Franklin?

Pardon for the blatant self-promotion, but I posted some unsolicited advice for the Franklin on my private blog.
And, with that, you won’t hear much from me the next few days as I’m on vacation. But I plan on coming back relaxed, refreshed and ready to geek out on science in Philly.

The Franklin presents Science at the Pub, tonight at McGillan’s 8-11 pm!

[ August 28, 2008; 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. ] I’m just basing this on the Twitter account of TheFranklin (aka The Franklin Institute), but they’ll be hosting Science at the Pub at McGillan’s Olde Ale House, 1310 Drury St. in Center City. A fine time at a fine establishment, I’m sure.

If my kid didn’t have the croup (and if I had slept last [...]

Summer Hiatus Coming to a Close Soon

You might have noticed that there haven’t been many updates around here. There are two major reasons behind the summer slow-down.
First, its the summer and I’m at the computer less.
Second, its the summer and less fun science-related stuff has been scheduled. Outside of the local museums, at least.
So, expect more soon. Meanwhile, for more Whatty [...]
